Reading 1

A reading from the book of Genesis

14 When Abram heard that his nephew, Lot, had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred eighteen of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 He divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and routed them and pursued them to Hobah (hoh-BAW), north of Damascus. 16 Then he brought back all the goods and also brought back his nephew Lot with his goods and the women and the people.

17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer
(ked-or-law-OH-mer ) and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (SHAY-veh) is, the King’s Valley. 18 And King Melchizedek (mel·kee·zuh·dek) of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High. 19 He blessed him and said,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,]
    maker of heaven and earth,
20 and blessed be God Most High,[c]
    who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”

And Abram gave him one-tenth of everything.

Thanks be to God

The response to the Psalm is

The Lord is gracious and merciful

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
    in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
Great are the works of the Lord,
    studied by all who delight in them.

The Lord is gracious and merciful

He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds;
    the Lord is gracious and merciful.
He provides food for those who fear him;
    he is ever mindful of his covenant.

The Lord is gracious and merciful

He sent redemption to his people;
    he has commanded his covenant forever.
    Holy and awesome is his name.

The Lord is gracious and merciful

Reading 2

A reading from the First letter of Paul to the Corinthians

Brothers and sisters:
For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for[a] you. Do this in remembrance of me.”  In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”  For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be answerable for the body and blood of the Lord. Examine yourselves, and only then eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For all who eat and drink[b] without discerning the body[c] eat and drink judgment against themselves. For this reason many of you are weak and ill, and some have died.[d]

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke
Glory to you, O Lord

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” 33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem, and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34 They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
